Write Business in Other States: A Guide for Independent Agents

By SIA of NC |  5 min read | Published August 27th, 2025

Many prospective partners ask the same question: Can I write business in other states? The short answer is yes. With the right licenses, strong carrier partnerships, and a clear strategy, our members can expand beyond North Carolina and reach new markets. Writing business across state lines can open the door to more revenue opportunities, attract clients in multiple regions, and position your agency as a competitive force in today’s insurance marketplace.

Licensing and Compliance: The First Step

Before placing policies, agents must secure non-resident licenses. Each state sets its own rules, so confirming requirements upfront prevents compliance issues.   Networks like SIA of NC already hold licenses in multiple states, giving members the abilty to write business outside of their home state immediately. When necessary, they can even obtain licenses in other states to help accommodate your growth. Still, obtaining your own non-resident license strengthens independence and credibility over the long term.

Testing New Markets Strategically

High-growth states like Florida, Texas, and Tennessee often attract independent agents because of their higher premiums and growth potential. But before diving in, it’s wise to test the waters. Start by leveraging existing carrier relationships or network connections to explore opportunities. Look at your own data—hit ratios, target classes of business, geographic trends, and past successes—to identify the right market to pursue. Writing a few initial policies can help determine if the opportunity truly fits your expertise before making a larger commitment.

Carrier Partnerships Across State Lines

Simply holding a license and a direct appointment doesn’t guarantee business. Many carriers restrict coverage to specific regions, while national carriers may allow broader multi-state placements. The key is to build strong carrier partnerships and understand each carrier’s appetite. Doing so ensures alignment with the right markets and prevents wasted time and effort.

Expanding Your Agency’s Reach

Independent agents can write business in other states with the right preparation. By securing licenses, building carrier partnerships, and using networks strategically, agencies can confidently expand into new markets. Growth beyond borders creates revenue opportunities, stronger client relationships, and a lasting competitive advantage.
